Corneal Mapping (Corneal Topography)

Corneal mapping, also called corneal topography, is a quick, non-invasive imaging test that creates a detailed map of the surface of your cornea, the clear front layer of your eye.

Because the cornea provides about 70 percent of the eye’s focusing power, even small changes in its shape can significantly affect vision. Corneal mapping allows your eye doctor to see those subtle details that are not visible during a standard eye exam.

This advanced imaging produces a three-dimensional map of the entire cornea, helping your optometrist or ophthalmologist better understand how your eye focuses light and where vision issues may be coming from.

Why Corneal Mapping Is Used

Corneal mapping is commonly used to:

  • Diagnose and monitor corneal conditions

  • Evaluate vision changes that cannot be explained by glasses or contacts alone

  • Plan and assess refractive procedures such as LASIK

  • Ensure proper contact lens fit, especially for specialty lenses

Unlike basic keratometry, which measures only a few points on the cornea, corneal topography analyzes thousands of data points across the entire surface for a much more complete picture.

What to Expect During the Test

  • The test is fast and painless

  • No contact is made with the eye

  • Imaging takes only a few seconds

  • You can return to normal activities immediately afterward

Corneal mapping is a powerful diagnostic tool that helps your eye care provider deliver more precise, personalized care.

Digital Retinal Imaging & OCT Scans

We use advanced digital imaging technology to closely examine the health of your eyes. Many eye diseases can be treated successfully when detected early, often before noticeable vision loss occurs. Digital retinal imaging and OCT scans allow your eye doctor to see what the naked eye cannot and to monitor subtle changes over time.

Your retinal images are stored securely in your medical record, creating a long-term baseline. This makes it easier for your optometrist to detect changes from one exam to the next, which is essential for diagnosing and managing conditions such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration.

Benefits of Digital Eye Imaging

  • Quick, safe, and completely non-invasive

  • Painless with no eye contact

  • No patient preparation required

  • Uses eye-safe near-infrared light

  • Produces extremely high-resolution images

  • Allows for immediate review and long-term comparison

Digital Retinal Imaging

Digital retinal imaging captures detailed photographs of the back of your eye, including the retina and optic nerve. These structures play a critical role in vision and overall eye health.

During the exam, a specialized digital camera takes a high-resolution image in seconds. This image helps your eye doctor evaluate the current health of your eyes and serves as a reference point for future exams. Comparing images over time allows for early detection of changes that may indicate disease.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

Optical Coherence Tomography, commonly known as an OCT scan, is one of the most advanced diagnostic tools in eye care today.

Similar in concept to an ultrasound but using light instead of sound, OCT creates highly detailed, cross-sectional images of the retina and optic nerve. These images allow your eye doctor to see the individual layers of eye tissue with remarkable clarity.

OCT scans are essential for the early detection and monitoring of conditions such as:

  • Glaucoma

  • Macular degeneration (both wet and dry forms)

  • Diabetic retinal disease

  • Retinal thinning or detachment

The test is completely non-invasive, painless, and typically takes about 10 minutes. It is performed right in our optometry office using light only, with no radiation involved.
