Why Scleral Contact Lenses?

Scleral lenses have become a preferred treatment option for patients with corneal irregularities because they provide exceptional vision, comfort, and protection for the eye.

Custom-designed to fit each patient's unique eye shape, scleral lenses can dramatically improve visual acuity for individuals with keratoconus, post-surgical corneas, corneal scarring, severe dry eye, and other complex corneal conditions.

Unlike traditional contact lenses, scleral lenses vault over the cornea and create a fluid-filled reservoir between the lens and the surface of the eye. This protective cushion helps maintain continuous hydration, promotes comfort throughout the day, and supports overall corneal health.

Made from highly oxygen-permeable materials, scleral lenses allow the eye to receive the oxygen it needs while providing a stable optical surface for clearer, more consistent vision. For many patients, scleral lenses offer a life-changing improvement in both visual quality and comfort while supporting long-term corneal healing and protection.

Case Studies

Here are a few examples showing the typical patient presentations and the successful outcomes. *These patient testimonials are meant to reflect actual testimonials of patients but not necessarily our patients.

Post Corneal Graft

For patients with keratoconus and corneal transplants, achieving clear and comfortable vision can be challenging. Traditional contact lenses often rest directly on the cornea, which may not be appropriate following a corneal transplant. Scleral lenses provide an ideal solution because they vault completely over the cornea and rest on the sclera, avoiding contact with delicate graft tissue while delivering exceptional vision correction for irregular astigmatism.

John came to Atkinson Eye Care seeking better vision after undergoing a corneal transplant related to keratoconus. Like many patients with complex corneal conditions, he needed a highly customized solution that would improve his vision while protecting the health of his corneal graft.

To design his scleral lenses, we captured detailed corneal topography measurements consisting of more than 11,000 data points from each eye. These measurements allowed us to create custom scleral lenses precisely matched to the unique shape of his corneas.

Because preserving the integrity of the graft was critical, we carefully designed the lenses to ensure they would not touch any portion of the transplanted tissue. Using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), we measured the exact clearance between the back surface of the lens and the front surface of the cornea, confirming an optimal fit while maintaining a healthy environment for the graft.

The result was life-changing. John achieved 20/25 vision in both eyes and now enjoys clear, comfortable vision throughout the day. His custom scleral lenses provide the visual clarity he was seeking while helping protect the long-term health of his corneal transplant.

This level of precision fitting is one of the reasons ophthalmologists, corneal specialists, and other healthcare professionals trust Atkinson Eye Care to manage complex specialty contact lens cases.

Post-LASIK Complications

While LASIK surgery provides excellent results for many patients, some individuals experience unexpected complications or visual outcomes that fall short of their expectations. For these patients, everyday activities can become frustrating when vision remains blurry, distorted, or uncomfortable despite multiple corrective procedures.

Debbi came to Atkinson Eye Care seeking a solution after experiencing significant vision problems following LASIK surgery. Although her original procedure was intended to improve her eyesight, her post-surgical results left her with reduced visual acuity and irregular astigmatism. In an effort to improve her vision, she underwent additional enhancement procedures, but unfortunately, her vision continued to deteriorate.

By the time Debbi arrived at our practice, she was struggling with extremely poor vision in both eyes and was searching for answers after exhausting other treatment options.

During her comprehensive eye examination, we identified a high prescription and significant irregular astigmatism resulting from her multiple refractive surgeries. We determined that custom-designed scleral lenses would provide the safest and most effective solution for restoring her vision.

Because scleral lenses vault over the cornea rather than resting directly on its surface, they create a smooth, stable optical surface that can successfully correct complex visual distortions caused by post-LASIK irregularities and corneal scarring. The lenses also provide exceptional comfort while protecting the health of the cornea.

Following her custom scleral lens fitting, Debbi experienced a dramatic improvement in both the clarity and comfort of her vision. Today, she enjoys sharp, stable vision and is thrilled with the results.

Cases like Debbi's are one of the reasons ophthalmologists and refractive surgeons refer patients to Atkinson Eye Care when advanced specialty contact lens solutions are needed after LASIK complications or other complex corneal procedures.
