Your eyes will thank you.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness in adults over the age of 50.
Macular degeneration occurs when the macula — the central portion of the retina — begins to wear down, causing central vision loss.
People who suffer from AMD lose their “straight-ahead” vision, making it difficult to read, drive, recognize faces and perform many routine daily tasks.
Fortunately, you can lower your risk of AMD by making some lifestyle changes, such as keeping up with your annual eye exams, eating a healthy diet rich in vitamins, nutrients and omega-3, getting regular exercise, controlling your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, wearing UV protected sunglasses and avoiding smoking.
While there is currently no cure for AMD, it can be controlled through various treatments. The earlier AMD is diagnosed, the more effective the treatments will be. This makes annual exams extremely important!
